The Bayou City Music & Film Festival(BCMFF) is an exciting new festival celebrating great music and the artists and stories behind the songs. This eclectic, five-day festival– held December 6-10 at independent venue 14 Pews in the Heights–features a great selection of music films in an intimate setting, along with guest artists, and lively receptions and parties. Including spotlights on Blues, Country, Folk, Rhythm and Blues, Rock, and Hip-Hop, the festival’s programming reflects the diversity of Houston’s culture and musical tastes. BCMFF is proud to present the Houston premieres of new music documentaries Bayou Maharaja about New Orleans musician James Booker, Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me about the 1970s Memphis band, Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton (This Is Stones Throw Records) about the L.A.-based indie hip hop label started by DJ/Producer Peanut Butter Wolf,and Ok Buckaroos, The Life, Music, & Good Times of Jerry Jeff Walker about the Country singer-songwriter. In addition, the festival presents special screenings of historic films featuring Texas musicians, including filmmaker Les Blank’s 1969 film, The Blues Accordin’ To Lightnin’ Hopkins and the 1976 “outlaw country” documentary Heartworn Highways featuring early footage of singer-songwriter legends Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, and others. The festival is programmed by film curator, Peter Lucas, who was named “Best Curator” by the Houston Press in both 2012 and 2013 for his work with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and Aurora Picture Show. He will be in attendance to introduce screenings and conduct Q&A’s with guest artists.
