is proud to present AN EVENING OF MUSIC & FILMS BY BILL FERRIS "Mules, Hoggies and the Blues" is an evening of films by filmmaker and folklorist Bill Ferris with live blues music. Films screened at the event include Give My Poor Heart Ease: Mississippi Delta Bluesmen, Hush Hoggies Hush - Tom Johnson's Praying Pigs, Bottle Up and Go, Ray Lum - Mule Trader and Gravel Springs Fife and Drum. Ferris will answer questions about his films via video chat. The screening will be followed by live blues performed by Eugene Moody and Tanya Richardson on the patio with refreshments. ABOUT BILL FERRIS:
William R. Ferris is widely recognized as a scholar of the American South, African American music and folklore. His classic book, “Blues From the Delta,” first published in 1970, can be found on the shelves of many Blues musicians and fans. Ferris has written or edited 10 books and created 15 documentary films. A former chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Ferris is on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he teaches “Southern Music” and “Southern Literature and the Oral Tradition.”
Ferris co-edited the massive Encyclopedia of Southern Culture” (UNC Press, 1989), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Other books include: “Images of the South: Visits with Eudora Welty and Walker Evans” (1978), “Mississippi Black Folklore: A Research, Bibliography and Discography” (1971). His book “Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues” (2009) was published by the University of North Carolina Press and has now been translated into French.
