Word for Word provides an intimate setting in the Heights for Houston writers to share new work.  Feel free to bring your drink of choice!  If you are interested in reading please contact us at  There is a $5 suggested donation for the audience

For each reading there will generally be 5 readers.  Scheduled readers are allowed 10 minutes each.  June 7th's readers are:

RADAMES ORTIZ: whose work has appeared in numerous literary journals including, Gulf Coast, Texas Observer, Open City, Hayden's Ferry Review, Cortland Review, and Exquisite Corpse. His work has also been collected in various anthologies which include: US Latino Literature Today, Regeneration: Telling Stories from Our Twenties, and Is This Forever, Or What?: Poems and Paintings from Texas. He was nominated for a 2003 Pushcart Prize. He was also awarded a 2003 Archie D and Bertha Walker fellowship from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. He was the 2006-2008 Naomi Shihab Nye Scholar and was a featured poet at the Poetry at Roundtop Festival. You can follow him on twitter @radameso and read his blog at 

EDWARD PORTER: has been published in Best New American Voices 2010, Colorado Review, Booth, and Inch. He's a former Madison Fellow, holds an MFA from Warren Wilson, and is currently getting his PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Houston. 

KEVIN PRUFER: is the author of five poetry collections, the most recent of which are IN A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY (Four Way Books, 2011) and NATIONAL ANTHEM (Four Way Books, 2008), a finalist for the Poets Prize and named one of the five best poetry books of the year by PUBLISHERS WEEKLY.  He's also editor of five volumes, most recently NEW EUROPEAN POETS (Graywolf Press, 2010).  The recipient of three Pushcart prizes, two Best American Poetry selections, and numerous other national awards, he is Professor in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston.

KOOMAH: is a Houston-area performance artist, filmmaker, poet, educator, and all around creative being who often highlights topics of gender and sexuality in their work. Their writings have been published in poetry anthologies and in indie ‘zines like Transistor Radio. Koomah can often be found performing spoken word and original storytelling at heART & Soul open mics and at various performance venues around Houston and in other cities.
